Big Bear Valley residents can properly dispose of expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs on a regular basis.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTDATE: January 22, 2015

The Big Bear Sheriff’s Station, in conjunction with the Breakthrough Task Force, is pleased to announce the availability of a Prescription Drug Take Back Drop Box. Effective immediately, Big Bear Valley residents have the opportunity to properly dispose of expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs on a regular basis, thereby preventing potential abuse and theft of prescribed medications.

Over the last four years, the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station has participated in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back Program which is available twice a year. With the installment of the new drop box, citizens can discard unwanted prescription drugs at their convenience Monday through Friday during business hours.

The Prescription Drug Take Back Drop Box is secured in the lobby of the County office that formerly housed the Big Bear Division of San Bernardino County Court, located at 477 Summit Blvd., Big Bear Lake. The front doors are open during business hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Prescription Drug Take Back Drop Box was purchased with private funds donated by members of Big Bear Chamber of Commerce and local businesses. Unused or unwanted medicines that are stored at home are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family members and friends, oftentimes from the home medicine cabinet. Additionally, former methods for disposing unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose potential safety and health hazards. The Big Bear Sheriff’s Station will continuously monitor the Prescription Drug Take Back Drop Box and ensure the proper disposal of all medications.
