Secondary Clarification

Once the wastewater is stabilized in the oxidation ditches, it is no longer considered raw wastewater. It is called “mixed liquor”. The mixed liquor flows from the oxidation ditches to the secondary clarifiers. The clarifiers are simply big tanks where the flow is allowed to slow down so that the solids will settle out. The solids in the mixed liquor settle to the bottom, while the clear water is allowed to flow over the top of the weirs of the clarifier. The solids are pumped back to the oxidation ditches, and the water is pumped to the alfalfa fields in Lucerne Valley. These clarifiers are covered by aluminum domes to prevent freezing.
